Subject: District Meeting Update RE: Hooves for Humanity Junior Optimist Club
Quick update on the JOI CALSO District Quarterly meeting….
First off Thank You to everyone for letting their kids come to the meeting and trusting us with traveling and caring for them for the day. Also Thank You to those who donated cans to bring to the event. I didn’t get a chance to let all the parents know as I had forgotten that our District was also organizing a canned food drive project for the meeting. I barely remembered at the last minute (my bad). I was able to pull a few cans together along with a few other parents so thank you for that. We did not show up empty handed for the kids.
Kids had a great time. The venue was amazing right on the beach. We got there right at 10:00 am (well maybe 10:05 – LOL) and went straight into a meeting kickoff from Jim Parrotte (CALSO Optimist District Junior Optimist Clubs Committee Co-Chair – For CALSO JOI District Lt. Governors). Jim is also the Secretary of the Del Mar – Solana Beach Optimist club and was the man who presented us to his adult club for consideration. So we thanked him several times over for that.
The kickoff was followed by each club that attended standing up and sharing their accomplishments for the quarter. Our Co-presidents (Kaitlyn and Isabelle) stood up and read the mission statement and introduced HFH as a new club as their accomplishment. Everyone there loved the logo and the concept of the club. The JOI President, Julia Cooper from Whitby, ON, told our kids she loved the name – which made them very excited. They also got to meet the JOI Past President Cole Mullins, who resides here locally in Coronado, CA. (Learn more about the JOI BOD here: https://optimist.org/joi/joi2.cfm)
They then went into ice-breaker activities lead by our very own O’hara Wickham (JOI 2017 President). During these activities the kids were given a number and split up into groups by number guaranteeing they will be teaming up with JOI members from other clubs. This was a great way for them to interact with others regardless of what club they were there representing. The overall unity of JOI really forms during these ice-breakers and the kids have a ton of fun.
We then went into a lunch break followed by the beach cleanup which lasted about 30 minutes. I would say the kids would have liked to stay on the beach a bit longer though. LOL
I have included the actual agenda at the end of this email for your reference.
After the meeting we stayed to discuss what the kids liked about the meeting and JOI. What stood out to them. I have included the notes taken by our Secretary (Leah Theolier) of what each of them had to say: (We didn’t have paper so she quickly made bullet points on her phone)
Thoughts about the meeting:
1. Kaitlyn: Love the whole concept and think it’s a good idea to involve the whole community, meeting new people, and receiving new ideas
2. Maty: Good learning experience. Learned that there is more clubs that all work for the same goal
3. Hope: Liked to meet new people and it was a lot of fun. Good experience to be a part of the club
4. Isabelle: Enjoyed meeting people who run junior optimist and play the ice breaker games
5. Giselle: Meet new people and had the opportunity to clean up the beach
6. Alisa: Fun to meet new people from around the world and enjoyed the ice breaker game
7. Brianna: Loved meeting friendly people who want to work and have fun with you. Also, thought the ice breaker game was fun
8. Matthew: Favorite part was going to the beach and cleaning up and thought the whole event was very fun
9. Leah… forgot to make notes of her own feedback. :)~
We also encouraged the kids to really put thought into the Optimist Creed and we had each of them read a line.
We then discussed the higher positions within Junior Optimist such as Governor and President, using O’Hara as a good example, and encouraged the kids to think about if it’s something they might be interested in working towards.
We also discussed how soon we want to have the first official meeting and ideas to think about for that meeting.
We mentioned the JOI Convention that will take place in June of 2020 in Schaumburg, IL. This is an amazing opportunity for the kids but it does take some fundraising to cover some of the costs. District and our Adult club may be able to assist with some of the funds but it’s not typically enough to cover all the airfare and accommodations. I have included a link to more information about this event online for your reference:
2020 JOI Convention
We hope the kids came home with positive feedback.

We will reach out to you soon about the date, time and location for the first HFH member meeting. We want to make sure it’s convenient for everyone to make it and don’t want this to take over your lives. However, the momentum is strong right now and it’s a good time to get the kids started on the planning of their first event (probably a volunteer event) so they can delegate who needs to do what… and there is no rush.
As always… please feel free to share with us any thoughts or feedback you have!
