We had a great meeting this morning with Don Crawford giving a history and slide show of the genesis of the Underwater Demolition Teams that we know as the SEAL Teams today. I didn’t know that the Army had a key role, did you?
But first, Lyman Green prayed for us and for the kids who start to school. Our Club Secretary Cheryl Sylvester started the pledge.
Dr. Joe Moore and Tom Catlan were guests of George Kunberger and Mark Blumenthal. Joe has an application somewhere in own slowly turning mill, and, after our meeting this morning, perhaps we have converted Tom.
DINGS–Brad Gerbel and hiz honor the mayor checked us in, and then stayed in the crosshairs of the dingmaster. Debra Nordlie made Mark’s list although it was a struggle. Mark had an easier time with his spouse as she was not on hand to protest and he paid her fine. Bowen and Hendrickson were late as usual, and Ted Khrone left his pin on the USS Midway so he paid.
Irish Flynn was signing up folks for the SuperFrog race scheduled for 24 September which is a Sunday. We man/woman the turnaround down at the Amphib Base. Get on the list next week.
Brenda Kracht was looking for a few good folk to man/woman the sign in table next month.
Read the Eagle Jounal concerning the Round Table tomorow morning at the library.
Bragging–BJ praised Robert Kracht for his Herculean effort raising funds for the Sports Fiesta, and Robert passed a big pat on the back to Dick Loomis for bringing in a big donation.
Lyman presented a surprise 90th birthday card to Gooch. Floyd Humphreys told us about celebrating a significant birthday at 20,000 feet above sea level. Carla Fargo has a granddaughter that swims like a fish, and Mark B. has one that sinks like a stone, but the family loves Legoland.
Bobbi and Bill Howland have another grandchild. Number five is right on schedule. Jack Couture announce that he and Paula now have ten grandchildren between them.
Jim Perino and John Watson skipped our anniversary party, and Roger Hayden, Karen Mellina, and John McKechnie left their birthday cake on the table, but we sang, sort of, anyway.
Two Parties–put our installation dinner on your calendar for Monday,Sept. 18 from 5-8 PM. Spiro’s Greek Cafe at the Landing.
Don Crawford gave us a great history of the wartime exploits of our UDT/SEALs, and various offshoots from their birth in the Spring of 1942 at Little Creek, VA through the Korean War. He will continue with the Vietnam adventure in a couple of weeks.
Question of the day–Which former President of the Optimist Club of Coronado received an award from fabled RADM Draper Kauffman of our UTD SEALs for exploits against the Golf Team of the Black Knights of the Hudson. A free breakfast to the first right answer.
Reminder on August 31st… SPORTS FIESTA brief and group photo shoot in our yellow shirts.
