Hi Everyone,
Here are some updates on the PTMS JOI Club:
On April 16, we completed our 3rd sack lunch making of the year. This time, we made 120 sack lunches, a new high! That brings our total number of sack lunches made to 343. That’s a lot of meals! Great job everyone!
We had a club meeting on April 23, and we discussed a lot which I will be summarizing in this email. I also attached the slides we went over during the meeting.
Last Saturday, April 24, Katie, Ariana, and I participated in a lagoon restoration project. We helped out at the Batiquitos Lagoon with other Junior Optimists. We lifted logs and rocks, making a garden area. We also pulled out invasive weeds and planted succulents.
This Friday, April 30 from 2:00-3:00 at Sage Canyon,we are doing our kit making project! Ariana, Katie, and I have emailed multiple dentists and pharmacies asking for donations for our toiletry kits, but only one has responded and they said they are unable to donate. We are holding off on making toiletry kits but we will be making first aid kits this Friday since I can donate the supplies for about 100 first aid kits. Katie will take these kits to the Stand Up for Kids organization to be distributed to kids in need.
At our meeting, we also discussed a “92130 cares fresh food connection” where we pick food from local grocery stores and deliver it to people in need. We are doing this project on May 9. Ariana, the project manager, will email out more information soon.
We decided that we will be meeting at the “Ponce Recycling Center” in the Del Mar Highlands Town Center on May 1st (this Saturday) at 2pm. Even if you are not participating in the recycling project, it would be great if you could come since we will be going to get food and hang out in the shopping center afterwards. It’s important to have some time to bond and get to know each other a little better, so I thought this was a great opportunity to do so.
We also talked a little bit about the in-person Annual Optimist Convention. This is occuring in Atlanta, Georgia from June 30 – July 2, 2021. There will be Optimists and Junior Optimists from all over the country attending. If you are interested, please register by May 1st. The registration and more information is linked in the slides.
This was not discussed at our meeting, but I just received an email saying there is an opportunity for us to do a project on the last day of school, June 11. We will be volunteering at the San Diego Food Bank. This is super exciting because we are trying to coordinate this project with the CCA, TPHS, and CVMS JOI Clubs! We might be able to wrap up the school year in a four-club community service project if this all works out. I will send out more information once I receive it.
I apologize about the long email but we had a lot of different projects and activities discussed at our past meeting. Make sure to take a look at the slides as well since there is some additional information.
Thank you all so much for being a part of this club and I hope to see you soon at one of our projects!
Optimistically,
Sydney Mafong

Fellow Optimists and Friends,
Our Del Mar – Solana Beach Optimist Club sponsored Hooves For Humanity Junior Optimist Club, an equestrian based Junior Optimist Club focused on rescue animals, horses, and adoptable puppies has provided “essential services” throughout the pandemic caring for, grooming, feeding, and exercising horses daily throughout the pandemic. They recently ‘fostered’ an adorable litter of puppies caring for them until they each found their ‘furever’ home. Now, they are gathering up and donating books, primarily children’s books, to the Goodwill organization for reuse by shoppers in the Goodwill stores. Junior Optimists are finding ways to perform useful community service and at the same time reuse existing resources, giving them new life. Way to go Junior Optimists.
Optimistically,
