IB Optimist Raleigh Sanders did a great job representing his club at the Employee of the Year

Hello Optimists and Friends!!

Thank you to all of our members that came to our meeting on Saturday at St. Michael’s by-the-Sea. Due to our location change, we are saving quite a bit of money, which means that we are able to help more kids in our community!!

I attended Reilly Cornwall’s Girl Scout Gold Award project, Apathy to Empathy, earlier today. Reilly spoke to us in regards to this project as her mission is to raise awareness for homeless youth and in truly Optimist fashion, we were able to make a donation to this great project. She interviewed almost 30 young women and men based out of San Diego and Oceanside. A message from a 21 year old stated, ‘Just don’t be too quick to judge because we are human beings too and we just need a little bit of guidance and we just want people to notice us and show that they care about us. People saying hi to us during the day can make our day.”

Reilly will be presenting her project at Sage Creek High School on Wednesday, 2/21 from 6 – 8 in the cafeteria. She welcomes all of us to her presentation. We used to call this George Washington’s Birthday, and if you grew up in the DC area in the 1950s you headed downtown this day to all the ONE CENT sales. What deals we got if we got there first. Oh, for simpler times, streetcars, pay phones, moms who didn’t have to work, and bones that didn’t creak.

This morning in Coronado of 2018 Diana struck the bell, Al Aegerter spoke a grand prayer, and Matt or Megan Pontes started the pledge to the flag from across the room.

We started this meeting with a wonderful video about our deeply missed friend Stan Searfus.

This video with the music was created by the young folks who Stan guided through waves and growing times. Jan Searfus watched the pictures with sons Matt, Josh, and Jake. We know that their husband and dad can’t be replaced by images, but perhaps loss can be eased by the scenes that bring to life Stan’s lovely relationship with these boys and girls in this video.

Young Ben Ruef burned midnight oil producing the video that will be treasured by family, and his mom Julie talked about how much Stan meant to the kids and how he is still alive in their hearts and heads.

Diana Drummey gave some of your hardearned money to representatives of the CHS Girls Lacrosse team. The girls took $400 to be used for uniforms. There was some discussion of who got to hit whom with stick in lacrosse. We will leave that to our Dr. Seuss imitator Bill Parry who know all the rules. (Bill will be in costume for Dr. S’s birthday party on March 2 in the Winn room. Come and have fun and bring your grandkids. Erin Downey will have details next week.) Diana told us that Kingfish or Crawdad is recovering at home and can’t wait to get back before Diana gets too comfortable in the highchair. The mayor was on hand to tell us what really happened with the church sign. My biased version follows: A small, narrow-minded group of 30,000 people across the country belong to a dastardly organization know as Freedom From Religion Foundation with a stated purpose of “separation of church and state, nontheism, atheism, secularism”. This group of busybodies is making plans on suing the city for a sign that advertises the city churches. They are used to winning such suits and getting the losing cities to pay all legal expenses. In a better world these people would wear tar and feathers and be ridden out of town on a rail from the church sign.

Some guests today–George Bassola brought young George and Gina plus Jim Jamison and Jon Jacobson waiting for induction. And below girl scout daughters of Ashley Taylor with delicious cookies for all. The girls also took home a check for $249.99 for the troop from our club.

First year was 1996..new coach and assistant: Kaitlyn Couture. Banquet for team in May…looking for a photographer or donate time at concessions during the girls games.

Erin: Octagon Club President DeeDee Deleo. Thanked club for help on SuperBowl of Caring…the kids collected 648 items. The kids are working on adopting a low income school to collect and donate books to the students.

Bragging…is was a quiet moment of the meeting…but kicked back up for some dinging…Mark was chasing his tail after Optimists who forgot their pins and sadly caught Dan H arriving promptly at 0720 hrs.
