Great turnout for Team Jeannie at Relay for Life earlier today! Thank you to Skip, JT and Carol, Joe and Pat, Kevin, David, and Porama who showed up at Opening Ceremonies earlier today. At this point, the Carlsbad – Encinitas Relay for Life has already brought in over $105,000 for cancer. Their goal by the end of this Relay is to hit $130k. If you haven’t made it out to Valley Middle School yet, take your walking shoes and cash as they are still accepting any donations!
I am asking all members to please make a conscious effort to attend our meetings. As many of you know, we are not holding our golf tournament this year and we need all members/Friends of Optimists for any new fundraising ideas that they have. I love that our mission is ‘to help local kids in the community’ and with the golf tournament not on our calendar, we definitely need everyone’s input as to some new ideas for fundraising and for moving our Club into the future.
Please remember to use smile.amazon.com for any purchases that you make on Amazon!! Our club receives a portion of the purchases.

Good Morning Optimists…it is summer again and we were light in Optimists due to vacations and summer breaks.
Governor Aegerter welcomed us with a prayer and B.J. Adelson lead us in the pledge.
Again always a wonderful moment when we induct a new member…Marta sponsored by her darling Dennis Doreman. Marta shared that her maiden name is Salazar and came to San Diego in 1970 when her father opened Salazar Restaurants. She has been making many meetings and knows so much about us and now reading to be involved as a member.
Welcome Marta!
We had some presidential announcements but dear Brad Gerbel got so excited about the birthday cake he brought for birthday boy, Mayor Bailey he bragged during announcements…
Now back to announcements..Round Table Friday at 10am at the Winn Room…learn about homeless and solutions. Several checks written out to CHS softball, boys tennis, girls volleyball, and CMS PE totaling 1800 dollars… IT IS ALL FOR THE KIDS!!
Thanks again to Roy Mantz who has been working on the Avenue of Heroes nominations of our own Optimists Wynn Foster and Buck Rogers…hoping to see them up on the avenue in May 2018.
A past Optimist Dick Bey has passed away and no information at this time regarding services. Dick was always smiling and a hug when he would see you.
Numerous brags and lots of dings..apparently many people have lost the pins or forget them. HINT… pin it to your badge.
Congratulations to Matt Pontes who will be the Chairman for the Coronado Chamber Commerce with Brad Gerbel who is on the board.
We celebrated with cake..Mayor Bailey’s birthday who is of age…Gorgy B and Ken Ireland with our lovely serenading. Anniversaries… I think were none, but Mike Lavin is celebrating 47 yrs of marriage to his lovely bride as well as our Irish Flynn and his darling wife, Edie who are celebrating 54 years. CONGRATULATIONS!!!!
Good to see Charlie Ahern at the meeting who also won the opportunity drawing with ticket number 962734…
A lovely card from DJ Faldowskiand his family who moved after only being with our club for a short time, but lucky us we made an impact on him. A lovely knitted Optimist sweater was sent their way for their new daughter.
President Zoll kicked off the SF meeting with a personal donation of $200 on behalf of the Zoll’s and $200 for United for Reading… he challenged all Optimists to do the same…the challenge raised $4,050 dollars this morning ….if we continue down this path…who knows how much we will can raise with our outside sponsors.
Today’s meeting was updates on the Sports Fiesta 2017:
Lots of moving parts but as an Optimist we love this event and it is a signature event. All Optimists are expected to participate as a volunteer for this year on Sunday September 10th.
Due to homeland security with NASNI and Labor impact on the city, the city asked if we could move the SF to another date… they are working closely with us and helpful as we move SF this year to Sept 10th Sunday.
The 5k is being run by KathyLoper Events as a run on the beach from the fence at NASNI to fenceline of NAB and return. Kathy has 30,000 on her email list who she will send out about our event. The run starts at 0700 to end about 0830. Above is the map of the 5k race route.
The Triathlon is set for north beach as it has before..but we are still working on the bike ride on NASNI…should it work this year…it will be our last time. Triathlon will start approximately 0900 followed again by the rough water swim and paddle board.
Next week at the Thursday meeting you all will receive your sponsorship packets and chairpersons for each section of SF will be working on getting their teams together. For the new members…if you have a specific interest talk to the chair and get on their team.
The committee will be meeting next Wednesday at President Zoll’s home to make sure we are getting all the moving parts locked together and to make this annual event such an amazing success.
What a fantastic turnout this morning at our meeting!! It was wonderful to see all of you! Thank you to everyone that contributed to the great discussion this morning!!! I will be reviewing the index cards for all suggestions and will be sending a follow up email (within the weekend) to our members along with the Power Point that was presented. Please remember, that I am open to all suggestions!!
Please mark your calendars for Saturday, July 29th as some of us will be participating in Relay for Life at Valley Middle School in memory of Jeannie Esposito. (Please see schedule noted below.)

Out of town–strange computer–fat fingers–so I’m a day late.
But Diana hit the bell on schedule yesterday. The Cargills were still counting the money when Jim Cooper gave us a thumbnail sketch of Mother Teresa of Calcutta and then a beautiful little prayer attributed to Mother.
We all owe a rousing cheer to Caroline Lull who will step into the big shoes of Clint Coneway as Treasurer. And Caroline led the pledge to Old Glory.
(Before we get to the details of the meeting Clint sends that it is past time to pay your dues or to let Clint know that you are done with us. Either way let him know, please.)
We had several guests yesterday. Dennis Dorman brought Marta Radcliffe who will be welcomed into membership as soon as we find where Jim Zoll has put her membership pin. Life member Susan Ryan was with us from Del Mar. Mo was with Gooch. And our guest speaker Pat Denson had several members of her documentary filming team on hand to film our goings on or to gather evidence.
Bye the time that you read this many of us will be joining hands and hearts to pray for our dear friend Charlie Ahern and Angela in the loss of that spark of our world, dear Susan. May she rest in peace.
Another sad note was carried in Wednesday’s paper we read of the death of RADM Paul Speer. Paul was our shipmate for many years until moving back to Pennsylvania where he passed away. Paul was one of the “Flying Midshipmen” who took a shortcut to fame and glory in Naval Aviation. And he was our good friend. God bless him.
Some notes on the Sports Fiesta. The city is bumping our intentions to use Labor Day for our annual event. The holidays are hard enough to manage without our event in the mix. So the city folks will give us the last weekend of July as in the past, and guarantee the next ten years. That is enough for me.
Diana will meet with city planners Monday to make the September 10 date FOR THIS YEAR a reality. Rob Kracht will soon get your assignments for ads sales out. More information is on the horizon.
If you want to know all about policing of our little burg Laz Waczek invites all to participate in the eight week long Citizen’s Academy running from September 28-November 15. The meetings are on Wednesday evenings from 6 to 8 so you won’t miss Wheel of Fortune. Get involved!
We serenaded John Brassant with HBTY, and looked for Mayor Bailey and Jenks Jenkins to give anniversary cake to. They be gone.
Pat Denson is a documentary film maker from Texas who lives down at Broadstone (Oakwood). She brought her team and her story to us this morning. The editor of the Fort Worth Telegram invited her to share her drawer full of stories as a columnist. That gig developed into TV journalism and documentary films.
We watched a trailer for one of her works. King of the Cannibals is about a missionary named John Patton who brought Christianity to a South Sea people. You can find her work on Amazon Prime.
Next week we have a gent who will tell us all about Solar Power.
